when stillness culminates (2022)

For the version installed for New seed. XXXXXX. New seed. XXXXXX., each layer was set to play independently, meaning that dependent on the duration of each video and its loop point, the overall composition of the figure shown would change. After approximately 4 full “loopings”, the layers would realign. I added an interactive element that tracked movement in the space in front of the wall where the videos were being projected. The title is taken from Trinh T. Minh-ha’s When the Moon Waxes Red: Representation, Gender, Culture, Politics (1999). “when stillness culminates” is the first half of a repeating refrain through the text; the whole line reads “when stillness culminates there is movement.” When the piece detected movement, the videos would stop playing until a certain duration of stillness had been achieved.
